The American people voted for change in November. What I want to hear from the president during his address to Congress tonight is how all the change is going to benefit working-class Americans, including those who sent President Trump to the White House.
The president’s goal of rewriting America’s trade policy is one I share, including his willingness to use tariffs to secure a better deal for American workers and boost domestic industries. But what, other than trade policy, is he willing to do to meet those goals?
Some in the president’s party have begun to come around in support of unions. Is President Trump with them? What is his plan to ensure the new jobs created by incentivizing American production are good, high-wage jobs? Does he have a plan to leverage federal procurement to help support domestic industries with Buy American provisions? How else does he plan to bring American industries into the future, including heritage industries in Maine like fishing, logging, farming and shipbuilding? What is his plan for tariff revenue? Is it to lower the national debt? Subsidize American industries? Create new incentives for Americans to buy domestic goods?
Tariffs alone cannot rewrite decades of growing inequality, the hollowing out of American industry or the explosion of the national debt. I’ll be listening for evidence of a bigger-picture strategy.
It’s an important question, because there are still elements within the GOP pushing for the same agenda we’ve seen for years, which puts corporations ahead of workers and billionaires before middle-class families. Just look at the House GOP’s plan to cut health care for Americans and add trillions to the national debt to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy.
There is a version of President Trump’s change agenda that supports working families in Maine and across the country. I hope that tonight he makes clear his intention to deliver change for everyday Americans. If that’s the plan, I’m all in. If instead he shows that he will go along with the GOP old guard pushing the rigged status quo of the past, that would fall far short of the real change Americans are looking for.

Holy Bat Crap Batman!
Seems Jared has missed the whole GOP chain saw, wood chipper, Project 2025 thing. And Jared has missed that we Mainers gave 3 of our 4 Electoral College votes to Kamala Harris. That was the change we voted for.
Rep. Golden if you honestly believe that the president actually has a plan to help working Americans, I’m extremely disappointed in you. This man cares about one thing only, what can Trump gain from every action he makes. It’s ALL about him, no thought for anyone else. Don’t believe ANYTHING our president says. PLEASE listen carefully and do not be fooled.
