I don't appreciate that you think only "progressive activists" are crying out about what the republicans (and you apparently) are allowing to let happen in and to our government. Your complacency speaks volumes. Trump and his minions need to be removed asap and a real president elected to head up our country (not Vance) - someone who is qualified!
Your argument for supporting the Continuing Resolution (CR) focuses on avoiding a government shutdown and maintaining baseline funding. While that’s a reasonable goal, your dismissal of concerns about increased presidential authority is misleading.
The CR does expand Trump’s power in ways that should worry anyone who values congressional oversight. It grants him greater discretion over federal spending, particularly in defense and border security. It also removes Congress’s ability to veto tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) starting April 2, effectively giving Trump unilateral control over trade decisions with countries like Canada and Mexico. These provisions weaken the checks and balances between the executive and legislative branches, making it easier for Trump to bypass Congress and act unilaterally.
You accused Democratic leadership of misleading the public about what was in the bill. But why didn’t you acknowledge these very real concerns? If progressives opposed the CR because they didn’t want to hand Trump more executive authority, that wasn’t just political theater—it was a valid stance.
You argue that Democrats had no leverage, but if Republicans needed Democratic votes to pass the CR, that was leverage. Instead of using it to secure protections against executive overreach, this bill was rushed through under the justification that avoiding a shutdown was the only priority. That kind of thinking is how Trump has been able to consolidate power piece by piece.
Avoiding a shutdown mattered, but ignoring the long-term consequences of granting Trump greater authority is shortsighted. If he abuses these new powers, Democrats who supported this bill—including you—will share responsibility for enabling it.
Rather than voting YES on this CR, possibly the Democratic House Member's could have utilized their time more wisely by reassessing the necessary limitless spending Trump will put on our Military Budget installing SafeSpeach. Apparently, Elon Musk's company has received a bid by our US Government for approximately $500 billion USD for DomeWalk, which will be started as early as May 2025 securing our country against parrots from the Amazon Rain Forrest? Has Representative Goldham heard of this Government Project using Republican Labor and taking approximately 10 years to complete. This will secure our boarders from South American interference, mostly birds that migrate to The Great Lakes area during the summer months.
It is not just progressive activists. This continuing resolution was designed without any feedback from Democrats and is giving over even more power to the executive branch cutting out Congress. I do not think you are meeting the moment that we are in as a country and your vote as the only “Democrat” in the house to further the Trump/Musk agenda demonstrates again that you are only interested in retaining your seat. We keep hearing that we need 3 votes to flip the house to Democrat when in fact it is most clearly 4.
Yes! This is the first year I did not volunteer for Golden. I did vote for him but between now and 2026 will give my focus and resources to candidates in other states. Who although in 'red' districts voted true blue.
As Jamie Raskin (who originally beat an incumbent Republican against all odds) said 'I'm not interested in being a political center that blows with the wind. I want to be the ethical center.'
And for all Jared Golden's self vaunted self righteousness, Golden hasn't got a clue about ethics.
Same here re not volunteering this time but still voting for him. Unfortunately it seems he cares much more about the Republican voters than his supposed base. I think we have been taken for granted for far too long.
I voted for Mr. Goldham mostly over lack of additional Representative's in District. I'm not sure if he or Representative Goldham is privileged over voting against his co-conspirators, yet we find Angus voted to accept this CR as well.
We must have a Happy Media, this is how most Politician's vote, enticing the Media. That is why Elon bought out Giggles, that Media Company from Capetown, SA so he could credit himself with designing the Tesla car.
Also he does not have the courage to be an active Democrat fighting against the rapid implementation of Project 2025 and/or the analysis of an opponent's actions needed for strategic planning. I was a strong, financial and vocal supporter of Jared after meeting him and his wife at George Mitchell's home during his first candidacy but soured on him when he opposed all reasonable gun safety legislation and refused to back Kamala Harris. In Jared's defense he must represent all his constituents and district 2 has~ 50% Republicans, a large share of which are MAGA. He knew that his vote would not affect the outcome of the CR and most likely felt it wiser to placate MAGA constituents and Trump by echoing the GOP talking points, dissing the "progressive activists" ( who are the only active Democrat leaders),and vote for the CR hoping the administration will not defund programs critical for his majority constituents . HOWEVER, I believe his strategy is poorly devised and Democrats will nominate a more favorably qualified candidate in 2026 when Trump and Vance have been impeached, removed from office, and along with their totally incompetent cabinet.headed to prison for treason. May God have mercy on us all for our crimes against humanity by this duly elected administration. Signalgate is the tipping point..
I sure hope your analysis is correct! Yes, sometimes I think he just runs as a Democrat because he is assured our votes and panders to Republicans to get theirs. If he ran as a Republican he would only be assured 50%. I understand he needs to represent everyone but it sure doesn’t feel like he even tries to represent us. They didn’t even need his vote and they got it on the CR then he had the audacity to chime in and castigate people that actually can see what is happening. It is demoralizing.
It sure is true that this administration is dismantling our most precious institutions so what's the difference, they are doing it anyway. We need some leadership that will fight back!
Jared Golden is not someone I'd want to be in a foxhole with. He'd raise the white flag, rush to lick the enemies' boots, and leave the wounded and dying to fend for themselves. OK got that.
But Golden is so frigging self righteous.
He doesn't get that he's the only House Dem who voted for the dirty 99 pages of give-aways to Musk and Trump. Only a handful of Senators voted with him. Because of these few, every other Democrat will be blamed for everything Musk and Trump do in the next 6 months. When Democrats try to criticize them, the cry will be - "Democrats could've of stopped it but chose not to."
Golden is in office because the 'progressive activists' he derides, hold their collective nose and vote for him year after year. As long as he has a D after his name, he assumes he has us over a barrel. Maybe he does . . .
Why doesn't he come to the Town Hall in Bangor and see how his BS sells?
Your comments are disingenuous, I am disappointed in your vote, any action that gives trump a victory to crow over is a loss for democracy. I looked for leadership in opposing the wild actions of a President gone rogue. You provided nothing.
Jared, at this point Mainers have figured out that you're not for Democracy, and you're a Maga man. I'm expecting you to change party inflation soon so you can take Collins place......
Regardless of how you vote, it is very destructive for you to blame and criticize “ party leaders” and “progressive activists “. The Democratic Party is already divided, splintered, dysfunctional and with little power! Are you not being unbelievably naive when proposing to work with this administration???? In my military family, we even block our kids entreaties with “WE DON’T NEGOTIATE WITH TERRORISTS”.!!!! Surely you are aware that this regime is akin to authoritarian terrorists with the destruction of government and aims to “annex” sovereign countries. Can you please share a realistic path forward to overcome the destruction of our democracy?
If you seriously believe that this administration plans to annex sovereign countries, then you don't know a gd thing about world politics and strategic thinking. Stop depending on the news and start researching why he wants stronger ties with Greenland, the Panama Canal, and Canada -- without your prejudicial views of him in the way -- and consider that he might just be talking about our national security in the long term.
“Stronger ties”?? This bullying, disrespectful “diplomacy” will accomplish that???? Do not confuse prejudicial views with total rejection of this dangerous and unfit regime that poses the largest threat to our national security since 1938 . How much longer can you rationalize and normalize this???!!!
Sadly, you have bought into the notion that plagues the current generation of political thought. Many politicians of all stripes and parties have fallen victim to it, so you're in common company. It starts with, "But we've always done it this way..." Or "We've never it done it that way before..." Or "That's just not how it's done..."
I'm not "normalizing" anything. I'm saying that politicians have been doing things the same way for decades and we've been getting the same normal crappy results, regardless of political affiliation. DOGE has uncovered trillions of dollars in fraudulent spending by American politicians, and the outcry has been against the exposure, not against the criminals. If anything, the "normal" is criminal and crazy
Thank you again for the reply. I believe your referring to SkyDome which apparently starts in May 2025. Elon's Space-X will be involved along with various Republican construction magnates taking 10 years to complete with updates along the way, which means the taxpayer will be funding this Government project until 2050 or beyond. Like the Tennessee River Valley Hydroelectric project which was started by the Republicans after WWII and continues to be sucking off our US Taxpayers. Estimated cost of SkyDome is $500 Billion USD but with inflation skyrocketing as Big D controls Wall Street, one never knows.
Thanks for explaining your logic in voting in favor of the CR so thoroughly. You almost convinced me. It was a tough call. I just hope the House and Senate will now put their energy into standing against the chaos and for the government programs that our people, our country, and the international community depend on. The courts already have their hands full. If this billbis really intended to extend the FY2024 appropriations and priorities, then Congress must stand up when Trump and Musk try to freeze funds, fire workers under false pretenses, and trash our allies.
This CR does not cleanly extend 2024 spending - it is a 99 page Musk Trump wishlist of power grabs, concocted without any Democratic input. Most specifically handing over Congress' power of the purse to Musk and Trump. Trump has already said he will continue to impound whatever funds he wants to. The standing up and fighting will be done by the vast majority of Democrats who voted NO. Not by bootlickers like Golden.
I disagree! You should not have voted to pass it and neither should Democrats in the Senate. The Republicans will now say this CR was bipartisan when Democrats had no input at all besides the vote which avoided a shutdown. Republicans could certainly say it was Democrats who shut down the government, but Republicans have a majority, it's all on them.
I find it absolutely ridiculous that an actual 2025 budget was never passed. The entire year is based on 3 CRs. To me this means Congress did not do their jobs this year! The FY budget is supposed to be passed by Sept 30th, yet each year it is punted 3-6 months using CRs. This time it's being punted an entire year!
Congress needs to start doing its job and passing a budget on time each year, not making Americans, especially federal employees, wait until the last-minute wondering if the gov't will be shut down.
I am a part-time federal employee, and I was all for saying no to this vote and shutting it down until an actual bipartisan budget could be passed.
I think the reason behind not passing a budget lies in that simple fact, "as midterms approach" our reference to DEM/REP become more aligned with National Advertisement's and their assistance with "spreading the word". If we look at our Government and their number of employee's both National and Local, we find the vast majority are in those sector's as Reddish. Republican's love hiring their own, so as the budget gets closer to mid-terms, we see something actually getting voted upon and passed.
Thanks for explaining your logic. I was disappointed when I saw that you voted for the CR. I now understand it and agree with your position. I believe in my heart that we should not shut down the government. I remain impressed with your integrity which I saw first when you had the courage to change your mind about assault weapons. Thanks, Jared.
I’m sorry to hear he convinced you, Patricia. Jared doesn’t actually have integrity, and has consistently been a mouthpiece for MAGA talking points. Take note that he calls people “progressive activists” who want Congress to stand up against the Trump team’s illegal and unconstitutional activities, of which there have been many, all very public, up to and including defying court orders. Jared has consistently commented that he doesn’t want to jump to conclusions about these violations and will leave everything to the courts - which is both an abdication of actual congressional responsibilities and an equivocation because the only reason injunctions and restraining orders are coming out of the courts so quickly is because of how blatantly obvious the illegal activities are. It’s not integrity to pretend everything’s fine and turn a blind eye to anti-democratic activity, especially when you’ve sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution.
This is a sad attempt to use a moment of grave danger for maverick posturing; this post represents the pathology of the "I alone can fix it" brand of masculine demagoguery. You were elected as a Democratic rep and we expect you to play for the team instead of slagging off colleagues and leadership.
Take a moment to reflect and observe that you won by a narrower margin each time. You aren't gaining red voters but you are alienating blue. Your cowardice in not signing the letter for Mahmoud Khalil shows another sign that you are not up to this moment
Congressional rules give a determined minority rule to obstruct the majority. It is what Republicans do when they are in power. Democratic weak links voted for a 'dirty' CR which had no Democratic input.
"The Constitution provides that every American citizen shall be represented in Congress through his or her elected representative. Theoretically, this means the voice of every American will be heard in the legislature. Citizens are not guaranteed that Congress will adopt laws and budgets that they approve of – that will be determined by the majority – but the Constitution provides them representation at the table. While the House majority has the right to pursue its policy objectives, the intent behind the Constitution is that the minority has a right to be heard.
House rules should provide procedures that enable it to function in an orderly manner."
JARED ... Adam Kinzinger--nobody's idea of an extremist progressive--put out a video today on his Substack in which he mentioned you by name, and spotlighted why the strategy you argue for here is 100 percent wrong. The video is only 10 minutes long and I urge you to watch it.
I want to like you Jared and agree shutdowns are a mess, but if you're not screaming at the top of lungs and in your communications how obscene it is that the unelected world's richest man is destroying people's lives all day, I think you on your way to becoming about as relevant to me as Susan Collins. Do better.
I don't appreciate that you think only "progressive activists" are crying out about what the republicans (and you apparently) are allowing to let happen in and to our government. Yes, I was honestly surprised by King’s vote. I guess I am more naive than I thought.
I’m hoping for an independent contender for 2026.
Also he does not have the courage to be an active Democrat fighting against the rapid implementation of Project 2025 and/or the analysis of an opponent's actions needed for strategic planning.
